What is Web 3.0?
Just when we were getting used to Web 2.0 and all the collaboration that enabled, people are starting to talk about Web 3.0! But what is it?
According to MarketingVOX, Web 3.0 “promises more recommendations, free services, intelligent (semantic) searches, and information that’s no longer random data, but tailored, highly intuitive and delivered in real time.”
A Maltese software applications provider, ICON, is raising awareness about Web 3.0 by identifying some trends that are in line with Web 3.0 philosophy.
- Mobile applications that link you to services depending on your whereabouts. Loopt.com, in the US, is already linking users to others in their social networks who are located nearby.
- Maps that give you smart information, such as openstreetmap.com, which maps such diverse things as hiking routes, ski runs and wine tours.
- Personal organisers that go the extra step to get to know you, such as tripit.com, which promises to be your ‘personal, full-service travel assistant’ by compiling your itineraries with transport options, weather reports and local attractions.
- Collaborative tools such as Slideshare.net and 280slides.com allow users to search for the latest thinking on a topic via shared presentations.
- The list of smart audio tools is endless, but songkick.com, which tells users of concerts they’ll be interested in based on their music library gets a mention from ICON.
- Social media intermediaries are starting to fill the need for people to manage their online worlds. The most talked about of these are the third party platforms that have sprung up to help make sense of Twitter.
